Correction of Name, Area, or Khasra Number in Revenue Records – Legal Steps in Himachal Pradesh

By Barowalia & Associates ·

Accurate land records are essential for protecting ownership rights, selling or transferring land, and availing government services. In Himachal Pradesh, land details like the owner’s name, area of land, or khasra number are recorded in official documents such as Jamabandi, Shajra Nasab, and Tatima. However, due to clerical mistakes, name spelling errors, old records, or data entry problems, these records often contain inaccuracies.

Correcting these mistakes is not automatic—you must follow a legal process to have the changes officially reflected in the revenue records.

Common Errors in Revenue Records

  • Owner's name spelled incorrectly or recorded in an old form
  • Father’s name or surname missing
  • Incorrect area of land shown
  • Wrong or missing khasra number
  • Overlapping boundaries due to digitization errors
  • Unrecorded partition or transfer

Even small mistakes can cause big problems during sale, partition, inheritance, or construction, so timely correction is necessary.

Legal Process for Correction

There are two main ways to correct revenue records in Himachal Pradesh:

1. Correction Through Revenue Authorities (Administrative Route)

This is used when the error is minor or clerical in nature (e.g., name spelling, incorrect entry by Patwari, typing mistake).

Steps:

  1. Submit Application to the Patwari or Tehsildar
  • Mention the error and the correct details
  • Provide Jamabandi copy and other supporting records
  1. Attach Proof Documents
  • Aadhaar card, voter ID, PAN card (for name corrections)
  • Copy of registered deed or court order (if available)
  • Old Jamabandi entries (to show correct data)
  1. Verification and Field Report
  • Patwari or Kanungo inspects the land and records
  • A correction report is submitted to the Tehsildar
  1. Order for Correction
  • If found genuine, the Tehsildar passes an order for correction
  • Updated entries are made in the next Jamabandi

This route is faster for undisputed and genuine clerical mistakes.

2. Correction Through Civil Court (Judicial Route)

If the error leads to a dispute, or if there is opposition from other parties, a simple application is not enough. You need to file a civil suit for declaration and correction of records.

Example:

  • A family member is wrongly shown as owner
  • Area shown is less than actual possession
  • Khasra number has been mistakenly recorded for another plot

In such cases, the court examines the evidence and passes a decree, which must be submitted to the revenue authorities to update the records.

Why Timely Correction Is Important

  • You may be unable to sell or gift the land
  • Loan or mutation requests may be rejected
  • Disputes may arise during partition or inheritance
  • Incorrect khasra numbers may lead to encroachments or litigation
  • You could lose government benefits tied to land records
